Fun With Salon Radio & Int'l Women Artists' Salon

l to r: Simi Toledano, Penny Jackson, Marina Zaccaria, & me
It was great fun to be on Thursday night's  Salon Radio show on City World Radio.
I was interviewed by the wonderful Marcina Zaccaria  along with playwright Penny Jackson in an evening curated by Simi Toldenano. The weekly show airs at 8 PM and is re-broadcast at midnight; it's a project of the International Women Artists' Salon.

I followed that up on Saturday night at Dixon Place on NYC's Lower East Side with a presentation for the Salon's monthly performance evening on the theme of Traditions - perfect for the holiday season.  It was a terrific prompt to think about DETOURS feature from a different perspective, and I put together this short video. The first scene (with Richard Kind and Tara Westwood) reflects a cultural tradition of lighting candles and praying or meditating before taking on a challenge. The other clips (which feature Carlo Fiorletta, Kim Director, Ashley Lanzoni, and Paul Sorvino ), illustrate traditions of the (fictional) Giraldi family.

Delightful DETOURS Reviews

It's been a joy to see the delightful reviews of DETOURS, both on Amazon Prime, where we're thrilled to release it, and on our IMDB page. It's now available in both the US and the UK, with additional locations expected soon.

These are mong my favorite comments from fans: "what a charmer!" "wonderfully poignant," and "I love uplifting, poignant movies and this is one of those!" Our stars - Tara Westwood and Carlo Fiorletta - are "outstanding" and the supporting cast - which includes Richard Kind, Paul Sorvino, Michael Cerveris, and  Phyllis Somerville - is "delectable."

But this might be the best of all so far: "I am so glad that I purchased this movie as I plan to watch it over and again."

Amazon Prime members watch for free, and rental is just $2.99 for non-members.

DETOURS to be Released on Amazon Prime November 25!

I'm delighted to announce that my 2nd feature film,  DETOURS, will be released on Amazon Prime on Friday November 25! Prime members will be able to watch for free, while rental will start at $2.99 for non-members.

I'll share the Amazon link, as soon as it's available, but it will also be accessible via the IMDB page, as they're owned by Amazon.

DETOURS is a road-trip dramedy about a newly-single New Yorker (played by Tara Westwood ) who re-locates to Florida for a new job. She travels south with her widowed dad (Carlo Fiorletta ) and her mom's ashes in a coffee can.

The wonderful supporting cast includes Richard Kind, Michael Cerveris, Paul Sorvino, and Phyllis Somerville. The director is Rob McCaskill; I wrote the screenplay and produced it. The wonderful cinematography is by Chris Eadicicco.

The soundtrack features music by Lane Turner,   Michael Cerveris, Jon Lee, Katherine Hughes, and Andre Fratto.

Our terrific new poster by photographer David Spagnolo is here too!

I'm delighted to share DETOURS, our story about family, over Thanksgiving weekend,

Photo Shoot for a New DETOURS Poster

As we prepare to launch DETOURS feature on Amazon Prime, we've realized that it's time for a great new poster, so it was a pleasure to spend this past Monday at the Brooklyn studio of photographer David Spagnolo. He did a tremendous job with our 2 stars Tara Westwood and Carlo Fiorletta. It was clear that David had not only watched DETOURS, but he had a great handle on the characters and how to show their essence in a single photo.  I'm very excited to see what he comes up with.

Be sure to check out David's work at www.davidspagnolo.com - his combination of fashion and sports photography is amazing.

More to come soon, including our release date!

DETOURS: Coming Soon to Amazon Prime!

I'm delighted to announce that DETOURS will be released soon exclusively on Amazon Prime! This means that it will be free to watch for members, and available to rent or buy for non-members. I'll post an exact date as soon as I have one.

It's great to be working once again with Distribber on this - they've been terrific with my first feature, Surviving Family, and I'm looking forward to continuing the relationship.

Here's a small taste of Detours - one of my favorite scenes featuring Carlo Fiorletta and Peter Graham, with Tara Westwood at the wheel.

Lower Prices, or the McDonald's Effect

One of the challenges of indie filmmaking - like many other small businesses - is figuring out the best price point for your product.

My first feature, Surviving Family, is available on iTunes and Amazon Prime. Prime members can watch for free but for iTunes and regular Amazon, I set the price. The split is 70/30 for iTunes sales and 60/40 for their rentals; it's 50/50 with Amazon. I work with Distribber for the set up and to collect revenue; they do not take a percentage of sales or rentals.

I recently decided to reduce the rental price in both places to $0.99 - it took a bit of persistence (and help from the Distribber support staff) to make that happen, as it's what the companies consider a "promo" price rather than a "regular" price.

Why did I do it?  For a small movie with some recognizable actors (Billy Magnussen, Tara Westwood, Katherine Hughes, Vincent Pastore, and the wonderful Phyllis Somerville) but that is not widely known to movie watchers, I need people to take a chance with their entertainment budget. I figure $0.99 is the cost of a cup of coffee at McDonald's and a reasonable amount to gamble on an unknown movie.

Was this a good move?  I'll let you know in 6 months!

Golden Door Festival Awards & Nominations

Tara Westwood - Best Actress Winner
Carlo Fiorletta - Best Actor Nominee

We had a great DETOURS screening at the Golden Door Film Festival this past weekend, which culminated in terrific recognition at the awards ceremony.

The Loews Jersey City theater is a beautiful movie palace that opened in 1929; it's only been partially restored so far but the lobby is spectacular, the screen is enormous, and the
Richard Kind - Best Supporting Actor Winner
was very good (stereo not Dolby, alas). Our road-trip comedy looked and sounded amazing. A great aspect of the location is that it's across the street from the Journal Square PATH train, which runs from Manhattan, and that's where much of our (very appreciative) audience came from.

The terrific festival wrapped up on Sunday with the awards ceremony: our wonderful star Tara Westwood won the Best Actress award; Carlo Fiorletta, who is equally good as her dad, was nominated for the Best Actor award; and the always excellent Richard Kind received the Best Supporting Actor award.

All in all, it was a very good weekend indeed.

Great DETOURS Screening at The Strand!

We had a great screening of DETOURS on September 18 at the Strand Theater in Lakewood, NJ - it was a terrific return to one of the Ocean County locations where we shot back in October 2014. The team at the Strand was wonderful, both then and now, and I hope to have the opportunity to work with them again.

The crowd included a lot of our wonderful extras, and I was so glad to see that they really enjoyed the movie. It was such fun to actually HEAR when people recognized themselves on the screen.

Carlo Fiorletta at Bay View Cafe
Tara Westwood & Paul Sorvino

We're very excited to be screening DETOURS at the beautiful Strand Theater in Lakewood, NJ on Sunday September 18 at 7 PM!

It will be almost exactly 2 years since we went into production right here in Ocean County, New Jersey.  Everyone was wonderfully helpful and supportive, and we're thrilled to bring the movie back home.

In addition to shooting at The Strand Theater itself - a gorgeous venue that dates back to the roaring 20's - we hit a lot of great local spots. The photo at the top left is DETOURS star Carlo Fiorletta on a return visit to the delightful Bay View Cafe in Lavallette, with a photo that was taken of him, his co-star Tara Westwood, and director Rob McCaskill by our stills photographer Hank Gans.

At the top right is the wonderful Paul Sorvino with Tara Westwood at another great Jersey Shore location - Charlie's Farm Market in Normandy Beach.

Tickets are $15 in advance at www.strand.org and $20 at the door. Join us on the 18th for a delightful father/daughter road trip comedy from NYC to Florida, with a lot of Jersey beautfy!

Great DETOURS Review

A good review is always a thrill, and I'm especially happy with this one:The Independent Critic on Detours.

It's especially complimentary about our two lead actors: "[DETOURS is] a rather quirky yet relatable piece of cinema that benefits greatly from the co-leading performances of Tara Westwood and Carlo Fiorletta who humanize the film's dramatic and humorous moments with emotionally honest yet laid back performances."

And on our terrific DP: "Chris Eadicicco's lensing is clear and intimate despite the challenges of shooting a road picture on a lower budget."

All in all, it's great to see our entire team, including musicians, get such positive feedback.

DETOURS Nominated for Best Picture at AOF; Will Screen Saturday Sept 3

I'm absolutely thrilled that DETOURS has been nominated for the Best Picture award at the 12th annual Action on Film (AOF) festival! Our screening will be on Saturday September 3 at the beautiful Krikorian 12 Movie Theater in Monrovia, CA; tickets are available HERE.

I've been a part of AOF as both a writer and a filmmaker since 2007 when my very first short, Albert and Mandy, screened there. Founder and Festival Director Del Weston has done a great job of developing the festival since its earliest years, when movies screened at the Long Beach Convention Center (and I was overjoyed to be there!).

If you're in the area - Monrovia is just 45 minutes north of L.A. - I hope you'll come out to see DETOURS on the big screen.

The Strand Theater - More Prep & Promotion for DETOURS screening

Exterior

Fran Whitney of the Strand Staff
Today's DETOURS project was a visit to the beautiful Strand Theater in Lakewood, NJ, which is where we'll have our New Jersey premiere! We shot a great scene there - through the magic of cameras and editing, Tara Westwood and Carlo Fiorletta walk through a theater entrance in Florida (the The Palladium Theatre in Saint Petersburg, FL) and the subsequent interior scene is in the Strand. This beautifully restored theater was built in 1922 and is a national historic landmark.

I dropped off our posters for the event, tested the hard drive with their tech guru (it worked, always a good sign!), and got a tour from the delightful Fran Whitney.

DETOURS screens at the Strand on Sunday evening September 18 at 7 PM; tickets are $15 in advance at www.strand.org or $20 at the door. The address is 400 Clifton Avenue, Lakewood, NJ. There's a municipal parking lot across the street.

DETOURS at the Strand Theatre - Sunday September 18 at 7 PM!

Photo of Tara Westwood & Paul Sorvino

Shooting a scene from DETOURS
I'm very excited that we're having our New Jersey premiere at one of our great filming locations - the Strand Theatre in Lakewood on Sunday night September 17 at 7 PM.

We shot a lot of DETOURS at the Jersey Shore, at terrific local spots like the White Sands Hotel in Point Pleasant, The Ark Pub and Eatery and Used To Be's, Charlie's Farm Market, and the beaches in Lavallette.  I've been visiting a lot of them this week to ask them to hang our flyer for the screening, and I really love the support that we continue to get.

The best part has been seeing photos from our shoot on display at several of our locations. First  I stopped by the delightful Bay View Cafe, which, through the magic of movies, serves as 2 separate locations in DETOURS. I was delighted to see a lovely photo on their wall of  director Rob McCaskill (in hat) discussing a scene with stars Tara Westwood and Carlo Fiorletta.

The next day I visited Charlie's Farm Market, and was thrilled to see photos of the great Paul Sorvino with Tara Westwood in a scene from DETOURS and also chatting with line producer Caryl Pierre.

Click the link below to get tickets to this great event, which will be followed by a q&a session with McCaskill, Westwood, and Fiorletta...and me.

Working With Police on Film Sets | Rolling Tape interview

I had the pleasure of being interviewed earlier this week by Forris Day Jr. for his podcast Rolling Tape. We had a terrific discussion about working with police on film sets, which I did for both of my features: Surviving Family and DETOURS. We discussed the differing experiences in Jersey City and Ocean County, NJ, shooting with a process trailer (check out some great shots of that), and the police officer who let us use his house as a location.

It was a fun interview to do, and hopefully it will take a little bit of the mystery out of something that many low-budget filmmakers find intimidating.

Interview with DETOURS Star and Producer Tara Westwood

Tara Westwood & Michele Sorvino
I recently had the pleasure of watching and listening as our terrific DETOURS star and producer Tara Westwood was interviewed by the delightful Michele Sorvino, for her show Inside Hollywood on the Hudson.

They had a wonderfully wide-ranging conversation that covered Tara's career with Ford Models her transition to acting, and the many movies and television shows that she has coming out. They also discussed the terrific Golden Door Film Festival in Jersey City, and Michele's role as Executive Director.  Check it out below.

Interview on "Rolling Tape" Podcast

I met actor, writer and host Forris Day Jr. several years ago, when he gave my first feature, Surviving Family, a great review, and also interviewed me for "Scared Stiff Reviews."

Forris is now working with the Borgus Network on a new podcast called "Rolling Tape." I greatly enjoyed being interviewed by him recently about Women in Film, as well as both Surviving Family and my new fesature, DETOURS.

Check out the interview at the link below - the photo is of the wonderful Tara Westwood, who stars in both movies. And if you like the podcast, subscribe!

Carlo Fiorletta - DETOURS clips

Carlo Fiorletta & Deirdre O'Connell in DETOURS
I recently needed to put together a short video of Carlo Fiorletta's best scenes from DETOURS, and decided to share it here as well.  The first scene features the wonderful Deirdre O'Connell ; she is best known as a theater actress in NYC, and can be seen in Showtime's series "The Affair."  The second scene - truly one of my favorites -  is with the terrific Tara Westwood, who plays Carlo's daughter in the movie.

You can see DETOURS on Saturday night July 16 at the Long Island Film Expo in Bellmore, Long Island and on Sunday September 18 at The Strand theater in Lakewood NJ. More screening dates coming (very!) soon.

Paul Sorvino at the DETOURS Premiere

Mara Lesemann, Tara Westwood, & Paul Sorvino
It was wonderful to have DETOURS cast member Paul Sorvino join us and a wonderful full house at the Muvico Theaters for our premiere at the Sunscreen Film Festival in Saint Petersburg, FL. Paul is best known for his work in the classic mafia film Goodfellas and we love having him play charming coffee shop owner Joe DiMaria.  Tampa Bay Times' movie critic Steve Persall moderated a terrific question and answer session after the movie.

DETOURS Premiere at the Sunscreen Film Festival

Gary Busey & Tara Westwood
DETOURS had a wonderful premiere this past Saturday at the Sunscreen Film Festival in Saint Petersburg, Florida!  We had the pleasure of shooting the climactic scenes of the movie in the area - including on Tampa Bay - and it was great to be back.

I traveled with our wonderful star and my fellow producer Tara Westwood; we were both thrilled with how well-organized and well-attended the festival was.  It helped that we were interviewed by the lovely folks at Tampa news station Bay News 9 - quite a few people told me that they came out because they saw the interview, which you can check out here:

We had an enthusiastic and near-capacity crowd for our screening at the beautiful Muvico theater in downtown Saint Petersburg - the movie looked and sounded fantastic.

Tara was on a terrific panel on acting with Oscar-nominated actor Gary Busey, who was at the festival with his new feature Candiland. We both had the pleasure of participating in a panel on Women In Film, which was moderated by Linda J. Brown, head of the Cinematography Department at USC and director of the wonderful documentary You See Me

It was a great weekend, and we've got more DETOURS screening news coming soon!

Panelist on "Women in Film" at the Sunscreen Film Fest, Saturday April 30

I'm delighted to join the "Women in Film" panel on Saturday April 30 at 1:15 PM at the 11th annual Sunscreen Film Festival in Saint Petersburg, Florida! It takes place just hours before the world premiere of my new feature, DETOURS, at the festival - that's at 6 PM Saturday evening.

As a screenwriter and a producer, I'm well aware of the numbers -

Women had just 1/3 of the speaking roles in Hollywood movies in 2015.
Women were the protagonist in 22% of those movies, and the antagonist in 18% of them.

Women directed just 7% of the 250 top-grossing Hollywood movies  in 2014, and 15% of all movies. And wrote just 11% of the top 250 movies.

But movies with a female protagonist have done exceptionally well recently - think Star Wars - The Force Awakens or Mad Max Fury Road if you like action movies. And Pitch Perfect 2 or Room if you're looking for comedy or drama.

To quote Variety:  "Female driven movies make money, so why aren't move of them being made?"

I think there would be a lot more female driven movies if there were more women making the movies. I'm doing what I can to move us in the right direction. And I look forward to talking about it on the 30th!

Deirdre O'Connell - in DETOURS and The New York Times

One of the great things about casting a movie in New York City is that you have the opportunity to work with amazing actors who are more frequently seen on stage than on screen.  For Detours, one of the great actors who our casting director, Caroline Sinclair, reached out to was the wonderful Deirdre O'Connell. She plays Beth, the delightful woman who Dan Giraldi, played by Carlo Fiorletta, meets in a bar in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Deirdre currently stars in the Labyrinth Theater Company production of Mona Mansour's play The Way West. The New York Times ran a wonderful feature story about her this past week, which discussed her tremendous body of work in the theater, especially as what they call a "melancholy mom." The full article is available here.

As wonderful as that play is - I saw it and she's amazing in it - it's terrific to have cast her in a role where she is beautiful and charming and happy.  Click the link below to see some of it. Detours has its world premiere in April at the 11th annual Sunscreen Film Festival in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

"Detours" to Premiere at Sunscreen Film Fest in Saint Petersburg, FL

DP Chris Eadicicco on Tampa Bay
I'm delighted that my new feature, Detours, will have its world premiere at the 11th annual Sunscreen Film Festival in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

The climactic final scenes of Detours were shot in and around Saint Petersburg and Tampa Bay, so it's wonderful to return there for our first ever public screening.

The Sunscreen Film Festival takes place Thursday April 28 to Sunday May 1. I'll share the screening date, time, and location as soon as they are available.

"Detours" Cast/Crew/Special Guest Screening

Above: q& with 3 producers: screenwriter Mara Lesemann (left) and stars Tara Westwood & Carlo Fiorletta
We had a great cast, crew, & special guests screening of Detours recently at Anthology Film Archives in Manhattan. It was the first time that I watched it with both a big screen & great Dolby sound together, and it was everything I'd hoped it would be.  More importantly, the audience loved it, which was wonderfully rewarding for everyone involved. We're more excited than ever to share the movie at film festivals and then with the world as a whole.

Here are a few photos by Hank Gans.

The Art of the Edit - Part 2

My new feature, Detours, is a road-trip comedy. A newly single New Yorker must re-locate to Florida for her dream job; she drives south with her widowed dad, her mom's ashes in a coffee can, and a GPS with a mind of its own.

In addition to our wonderful lead actors Tara Westwood and Carlo Fiorletta, the terrific supporting cast includes Richard KindMichael CerverisPhyllis Somerville, and Paul Sorvino.

We shot the interiors in New Jersey and NYC, then went on the road to shoot exteriors through Myrtle Beach, SC; Savannah, GA; and Tampa, Florida. It was, to say the least, a daunting undertaking but an exciting one.

When we got a rough cut done, I reached out to a guy for whom I have a tremendous amount of respect - I'll leave him unnamed but he has a great deal of experience in many areas of the indie film world, ranging from micro-budget movies to some that are extremely well known. He graciously agreed to watch the cut with a group of us from the production team and give feedback.

I watched him watch the movie with my heart in my throat - would he love it? Hate it?

When it was done, he gave his verdict: great cast, awesome acting job across the board (yay!).

But the movie went like this

<<<<

While it should go like this

<<<<

I hyperventilated momentarily, then somehow sputtered out that I couldn't re-shoot:  there was no budget for that. He assured me that there was no need for that - it was all there. "Think of it like a puzzle, and re-arrange the pieces."

I started to breathe again, as I realized what he meant, and had a flash as to how to do it.

The next morning, we figured out a new approach: front-load the darker segments of the movie, and move the happier ones - pointing toward the eventual resolution - after the mid-point. Fortunately the segmented way that the movie was written - a series of scenes and interactions that CAN be moved around - allowed us to do this.

We chose this scene as the mid-point: it's where Jennifer Giraldi (played by Tara Westwood) begins to find her way to happier times as her dad (Carlo Fiorletta) still struggles to find his footing. And the scenery (Myrtle Beach, SC) is beautiful.

If there's a moral to this story, it's this: a fresh look at your movie can be invaluable. And always be open to a new approach. OK that's 2 morals - sue me :)
